If when attempting to take the school exam you mistakenly disallowed your browser or operating system access to your devices camera. You will need to allow it access or won't be able to take the exam.

This is nothing on our server side but a setting completely on the user's side browser or operating system settings, so don't blame us for it not having access.

Follow the steps below for giving access to your operating system and browser access to your device's camera.

If you cannot start the exam because it says you need to give permissions to activate your camera, Follow these steps!

To enable the camera for Microsoft Edge browser, click the lock icon next to the website's address bar (that is where you type the website name you are trying to go to ie: www.careerpathacademy.com as an example) and set the camera permission to Allow, then refresh / reload the page, if that fails...

Two quick shortcuts to refresh almost every browser on both systems:

Most web browsers have a bent arrow that looks like a bent arrow in the shape of a circle, this will refresh your browser window on the open tab for whatever site you are on.

Below are keyboard shortcuts to accomplish the same task, PLUS a hard refresh keyboard shortcut.

Enable Camera on Windows and in your Browser Settings

Enabling camera access for your web browser in Windows is straightforward once you know where to look. Since you’re on Windows 11, the system controls which apps—including browsers like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox—are allowed to use your camera.

Check Windows settings by going to Settings (hold down windows key and the letter i) > Privacy & security > Camera and ensuring access is on for both the device and desktop apps like Edge browser or whichever browser you are using.

🔧 Where to Enable Camera Access

The setting you need is the Camera privacy settings page in Windows. This is where you can:

• Turn camera access on or off for the entire device

• Allow or block specific apps, including web browsers

• Review which apps have recently used your camera

In the Privacy & Security > Camera window:

Make sure Camera access is switched On. This setting lets individual users on the device choose if they want apps to be able to access the camera.

Note

If the Camera access setting can't be changed, an administrator on the device needs to change the setting.

Make sure Let apps access your camera is switched On. This setting allows apps from the Microsoft Store to access the camera. It doesn't set which specific apps can access the camera.
Once apps are given access to the camera, access can be granted for each individual app. Scroll through the list of apps to find the desired app, and then switch On camera access for the app. To turn off access to an individual app, switch the app to Off.
If an app isn't in the list, it might not be a Microsoft Store app. Instead, it might be a desktop app.

To enable the camera for all desktop apps, after the list of Microsoft Store apps, switch On the setting Let desktop apps access your camera. Some of the desktop apps that have access to the camera are listed under this setting.

Desktop apps are usually apps that weren't installed through the Microsoft Store. They might include apps installed from the internet, a USB drive, or apps installed by an IT administrator. Internet browsers, like Microsoft Edge, and video conferencing apps, like Microsoft Teams, are desktop apps that need this setting turned on.

📝 What to Do Once You’re There

Make sure Camera access is turned On.
Ensure Let apps access your camera is also On.
Scroll down to the list of apps and confirm your browser (e.g., Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox) is allowed to use the camera.
Restart the browser if it was open during the change.

In Microsoft Edge (Per Site)

Go to the Website: Navigate to the page needing camera access (e.g., a video call site).

Click the Lock: Click the small lock icon (or camera/mic icon) to the left of the website's URL in the address bar.

Allow Camera: In the pop-up, find the Camera setting and change it from "Ask" or "Block" to Allow.

Refresh: Refresh the browser tab to apply changes.

Enable Camera on a MAC and in your Browser Settings

Enabling camera access for a web application on a Mac is pretty straightforward once you know where macOS hides the controls. A quick walkthrough gets you there smoothly.

macOS controls camera permissions at the system level, so start there:

1. Open System Settings

• Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner

• Select System Settings

2. Go to Privacy & Security

• Scroll down the left sidebar

• Select Privacy & Security

3. Select Camera

• In the list of privacy categories, choose Camera

• You’ll see a list of apps that have requested camera access

4. Allow Your Browser

If you're using a web app, the browser needs permission.

• Toggle ON the switch next to your browser (e.g., Safari, Chrome, Firefox)

3. In the menu bar, click Safari → Settings for This Website

4. Find Camera and set it to Allow

4. Under Permissions, set Camera → Allow

5. Refresh the page

Firefox

1. Open Firefox

2. Visit the website

3. Click the camera icon or lock icon in the URL bar

4. Set Camera → Allow

🔧 If the Camera Still Doesn’t Work

A few common fixes:

• Quit and reopen the browser

• Restart the Mac

• Ensure no other app is using the camera (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime)

• Check for macOS updates
